Schalke had been open about its decision to sell the franchise slot due challenges stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic and the relegation of its soccer club.

The Schalke 04 brand will remain a part of the LEC until the end of the 2021 season, with Team BDS debuting in Spring 2022.
